"Power plants can switch to the CoalTek product now and immediately be in compliance with the SO2 regulations."
Many coal-burning power plants in the U.S. face difficult choices to keep emissions of acid-rain causing sulfur dioxide (SO2) within EPA limits. They can install expensive scrubbers to capture the SO2 after burning "dirty coal." Or they can search for low-sulfur, high-heat coal—another difficult, expensive option.
CoalTek provides a better solution. "For power plants that do not have scrubbers, they can switch to the CoalTek product now and immediately be in compliance with the SO2 regulations," said Sanz-Guerrero.
CoalTek can deliver coal as low as .50 lbs. SO2/mmBTU – lower than the EPA's standard for compliant coal of 1.2 lb. SO2 emissions per million BTU burned.
In states with the strictest SO2 limits such as New York and Massachusetts, utilities can blend CoalTek's low-sulfur product with other coals to reach their environmental goals.
Heavy Industry
CoalTek also provides a solution for industrial power generators who may be struggling to meet the MACT environmental standard with the raw coals currently available.
Our process creates a MACT compliant coal at a relatively high BTU density that allows industrial generators to operate their facilities as designed without expensive equipment changes.
